New Medical Campus is Taking Shape

Through its ambitious Morganton Park Medical Campus in Southern Pines, Pinehurst Surgical Clinic (PSC) aims to create a healthcare legacy in Moore County.

PSC’s newest building (referred to as “2N”) just opened in the Morganton Road campus and is accepting patients in ophthalmology, plastic surgery, audiology, and at its metabolic and weight management center.  Pinehurst Surgical has approval to construct another building next door (“3N”) but has yet to break ground.

“Realistically, we are looking at breaking ground on 3N in three months and opening 12 to 14 months from then,” said Leslie Laws, PSC’s chief operating officer.

PSC’s buildings will be joined by new facilities for Pinehurst Medical Clinic, as well as Sandhills Pediatrics.  While Pinehurst Medical owns its land and building on the same campus, Pinehurst Surgical owns the remainder of the property and has big plans.

What is driving much of PCS’s vision is an innovative concept called the Human Performance Institute that will offer prevention, evaluation, management, and rehabilitation services for athletic health, with an emphasis on sports medicine and golf fitness. Encompassing the entire first level of 3N, a dramatic open-concept atrium will house comprehensive, non-surgical options for the professional and leisure athlete.

Plans call for the Human Performance Institute to also include what PSC CEO Charles Gregg is calling “the brain room” that will offer training and equipment to enhance attention, coordination, reflex, composure, recovery, and peak performance. All of this therapy will be available to everyone in the community, not just athletes.

The physical therapy division of Pinehurst Surgical Clinic is also planning a move to the Performance Institute. As part of preparation for the move, more than half of PSC’s  physical therapists have been certified through the Titleist Performance Institute.

In addition to housing the Human Performance Institute, the new 3N building will offer extra space available for lease. This “blank slate is open to oral surgeons, dentists, chiropractors, or any healthcare service that complements the community needs for such services,” said Gregg.

The newly opened 2N building also includes the Metabolic and Weight Management Center, a venture between PSC and FirstHealth of the Carolinas. The Center features a state-of-the-art kitchen situated among dieticians, nutritionists, and bariatric specialists.

Also on the first level is new space for plastic and facial plastic surgery and an audiology center. On the second floor is a massive ophthalmology center that will add capabilities for pediatric surgical ophthalmology.

PSC hopes to continue its footprint of “exciting opportunities to prioritize health and wellness,” Gregg said.

FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital

FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst continues to gain impressive distinctions, as it is most recently ranked the number 2 hospital in North Carolina in “Patient Picks”.

This patient satisfaction ranking in the March issue of Business North Carolina magazine reflects the top 25 acute-care hospitals in the state with 50 or more beds based on the percentage of patients who would recommend the hospital to others, as of December 2021. The ranking is based on the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems, a survey completed by adult hospital patients between 48 hours and six weeks after discharge.

Among those hospitals that Moore Regional surpassed to secure the #2 spot were Duke University Hospital and UNC Hospitals.

In early January, FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital was also named a Blue Distinction Center by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, the state’s largest health insurer.  BCBS recognizes hospitals for their quality of care in certain specialties, based on criteria including patient safety and results and input from the medical community.  Moore Regional was recognized for its specialties of bariatric care, cardiac care, maternity care, and spine surgery.

Moore County is truly a healthcare hub for the Sandhills region that continues to expand and offer the most comprehensive and innovative health services to the community.
