Always at the Top of the List
“Most Charming”, “Most Beautiful”, “Best”, “Top”, “Prettiest”, “Safest” – These are just a few of the adjectives often used to describe Moore County. For example: The Village of Pinehurst is one of the top 15 “most charming” small towns in North Carolina, and it is ranked as the 3rd “safest” city in the state. Sandhills Community College has been named the second “most beautiful” community college campus in the nation. Pinehurst No. 2 is ranked as the “best” golf course in North Carolina. FirstHealth Moore Regional is ranked as one of the state’s “top” hospitals. You get the idea.
Yahoo Life compiled a list of “The 15 Most Charming Small Towns in North Carolina” for 2021. They described the process of narrowing the list to just 15 as a “herculean task”, acknowledging that “the Tarheel State brims with so many tiny treasures it’s nearly impossible to highlight just a handful.”
But one community that seems to consistently find its way onto these lists is the Village of Pinehurst, ranked as the 4th most charming small town in North Carolina. It ranked higher than several coastal communities and mountain towns. Here’s what Yahoo Life had to say about Pinehurst:
Dubbed “the cradle of golf in America,” the entirety of Pinehurst is designated as a historic landmark. That sort of says it all. For that reason, this Moore County community has become a pilgrimage-worthy destination for people keen to hit the Donald Ross-designed fairways of Pinehurst No. 2—a course that’s hosted more championships than anywhere else in the country. OK, you’ve played 18 holes…now what? After channeling your inner Nicklaus and Palmer, play a classic lawn game like croquet or wind down with a hot stone massage.
Likewise, Moore County’s community college, Sandhills Community College (SCC) is currently highlighted on a list of “40 Beautiful Community College Campuses”. This list, compiled by Great Value Colleges, looked at campuses not just in North Carolina but throughout the country, and SCC was named the second most beautiful campus in the nation.
Great Value Colleges is an informational website that provides research-based articles and compiles various rankings to help users make informed decisions about colleges, degrees, and career options. For this list of beautiful campuses, information was sourced from the National Center for Education Statistics’ College Navigator Database, Wikipedia, the individual schools’ websites and other “most beautiful campuses” list articles. Here’s what Great Value Colleges had to say about SCC:
College President John Dempsey dubs the 240-acre Sandhills Community College “one of the most beautiful community college campuses in the state,” and there’s definitely some truth to that. Thirty-two acres of the campus consists of the Sandhills Horticultural Gardens, which were designed and are maintained by students in the landscape gardening program. The site contains 14 themed gardens that include the Fountain Courtyard, a whimsical Children’s Garden, and the Ebersole Holly Garden, the largest accessible holly collection on the east coast.
A few of the buildings at Sandhill, like Kennedy, Meyer, and Wellard Halls, have their own courtyards where students can relax outside between classes, while Stone Hall is adorned with its own fountain. The classic red brick architecture, combined with the native longleaf pines, dogwoods, and magnolias, makes this one great community college with a beautiful campus. Sandhills Community College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate degrees, diplomas and certificates.
