Top Hospital & Best Places to Retire Rankings Go Hand-in-Hand

One of Moore County’s most prized assets is our local community hospital, Moore Regional Hospital (MRH), the heart of the FirstHealth of the Carolinas healthcare system based in Pinehurst.  It is at the center of our enviable quality of life, and as the County’s largest employer, the FirstHealth system is a major driver of our local economy, employing almost 30% of our workforce.

But perhaps what’s unexpected is that our small-town hospital is not only ranked as a top hospital in North Carolina, but it’s also nationally-recognized for overall performance and for innovative and exceptional quality in several specialty care areas, such as cardiac care, and knee & hip replacement.  These are the kinds of rankings usually reserved for larger hospitals near major universities and in metropolitan areas, not in rural places like Moore County.  And yet, according to Business North Carolina magazine’s 2018 rankings of North Carolina’s Best Hospitals, our Moore Regional Hospital surpasses several of the big names including UNC.

In their March 2018 issue, Business North Carolina magazine looked at all adult, acute-care hospitals in North Carolina with 50 or more beds and evaluated them based on 25 metrics, including data from the US Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and criteria from Blue Cross Blue Shield.  MRH ranked #11 overall, tying with Duke University Hospital in Durham and ranking higher than prestigious hospitals such as UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill and Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

In addition, MRH ranked #2 in the state in “Patient Picks”, again tied with Duke University Hospital, based on the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers & Systems survey as of December 2017 that shows the percentage of patients who would recommend the hospital to others.

If you take accessible healthcare of this caliber and combine it with low taxes, a wide variety of recreational opportunities, and an abundance of senior living options, then you have a mix that’s very appealing for seniors, particularly those looking for a place to retire.  And you also end up with 2 communities in Moore County ranked in the top 5 Best Places to Retire in North Carolina for the 3rd year in a row.  For 2018, Southern Pines is ranked #2, and Pinehurst is #4.

SmartAsset is a financial technology company based in New York City that provides online tools and advice regarding personal finances.  To compile their list of best places to retire, SmartAsset gathered data on three separate regional factors that affect the quality of life for retirees:

1) “Tax-friendliness”:  State and local tax rates, both income and sales taxes;

2) Medical Care & Social Life:  The number of doctors’ offices, recreation centers and retirement centers per thousand residents in each area; and

3) The number of seniors in each area as a percentage of the total population.

Each county and city was ranked using these three factors, and an average ranking was calculated for each area, weighting the three factors equally.

Seniors can’t go wrong with choosing Moore County as the place to enjoy their retirement, and they can rest assured that their healthcare needs will be met.  With the diversity of senior services and recreational activities here, the opportunities for a robust social life are endless.

But we can’t emphasize enough that Moore County isn’t just for retirees!  The exceptional quality of life here does cater to the young at heart, but also to younger age groups as well.
