2018 marks the United Way of Moore County’s half-century of service to the area’s local communities.

“I’m very excited to celebrate the 50th year of service to our community of Moore County. Every year in Moore County, the people in need of help may change, but the basic needs of shelter, food and other social services do not change,” said UW Chair Chris Miller, administrative director of community health services for FirstHealth of the Carolinas.

“Our various partners over many years have helped fill the gap where other available resources have not been able to completely meet the need of our residents,” he said. “The community’s support over these many years has ensured the United Way of Moore County’s ability to bring together community resources, including fundraising, to fulfill its mission of working to advance the common good of the lives in our (Moore County) communities.”

“This celebration is an opportunity to look at the evolution of the United Way of Moore County, our donor base, and the how the needs of the community have changed with the military presence and its contributions to our county,” said UW Executive Director Linda Pearson. “We recognize, honor and celebrate our partners here in the community, and want to acknowledge that many of our partners are serving the military community.”

Since 1994, the United Way of Moore County has reinvested over $12 million in contributions back to the community. Currently the organization provides financial assistance to 16 local partner agencies that include Meals on Wheels, American Red Cross, Moore County Literacy Council, Sandhills/Moore Coalition for Human Care, Salvation Army, Moore County 4-H Youth Development, Boy Scouts of America, Communities in Schools, Northern Moore Family Resource Center, and Partners for Children and Families.

“Ninety-eight-and-a-half percent of local contributions to United Way stay right here,” Pearson said, noting that the partner agencies represent a variety of services.

She added, “The United Way exists solely because of the heartbeat of this community and our compassion for other people.”
